Future Makers

The 2026 Future Makers intake is now open. To be considered for Future Makers, you must submit an application and attend an in-person workshop on 7 March at LOT7. The application form will close on Wednesday 4 March.

Artists who partake in Future Makers this year will engage in a comprehensive program of professional development workshops across 10 Wednesday evenings (commencing 1st of April), followed by a co-led creation process with a public presentation outcome in September at Sydney Fringe Festival, and a commissioned performance project, with a performance season in early 2027.

This year we are offering scholarship positions to First Nations artists and artists from Western Sydney. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss this at [email protected]

Launched in 2019, Future Makers is Dance Makers Collective’s Emerging Dance Company for creative emerging dance artists aged 18+years.

Since launching, Future Makers have performed publicly in Alisdair Macindoe’s Counterfeit at Bankstown Arts Centre 2025, All In at Sydney Festival 2025, Sydney Fringe Festival in 2024 & 2025, in a triple bill at Riverside Theatres 2024 (choreographers Rhiannon Newton, Ella Watson-Heath and Eliza Cooper), Blacktown Arts Centre 2022 (choreographies by Kristina Chan, Jasmin Sheppard and the Future Makers), In Situ at Parramatta Park, Sydney Festival 2021, Dance Makers Collective’s The Rivoli in Sydney Festival, January 2020, and in multidisciplinary artist Nadia Odlum’s site specific performance Correspondence at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, February 2020.

Future Makers engage in an annual program which includes a 10-week training program of weekly masterclasses with exciting Australian choreographers, a co-devised season of works with a presentation outcome at Sydney Fringe Festival and a professional production annually. Future Makers members also engage in opportunities with DMC such as internships and training to deliver DMC’s public programs, as well as bespoke opportunities and benefits that arise throughout the year.

Future Makers provides a platform for aspiring emerging dancers and choreographers to work with professional artists in an inclusive and challenging environment, where they can develop their skills and work collectively towards public presentation outcomes. Future Makers is designed for enthusiastic dance artists with diverse skills, if you are a great performer, a clever creative, a good team player or any combination we encourage you to apply. The program does not discriminate against style or training; if you have a willingness and aptitude for dance of any kind please come along!

The Future Makers program requires an annual membership fee of $484 (inclusive of GST) that is used as leverage for funded opportunities. Future Makers participants are paid for the public season and equally share in profits made from the Sydney Fringe season. DMC is offering dedicated scholarships to Western Sydney and First Nations young people, if the program fee is prohibitive we will consider other supports on a needs basis, we also provide payment plans. There are limited places in Future Makers, we can accommodate a maximum of 22 participants annually which unfortunately means that an expression of interest does not guarantee a place in the program. Future Makers also automatically become Community Members, if you have already registered as a Community Member, this fee is deducted from your Future Makers membership.
